“In November of 2022, I called Tony Perkins, and Congressman Mike Johnson, so see what their thoughts were about calling government and faith leaders together to pray for repentance. The National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance is not a prayer breakfast. This is a 'no-breakfast prayer.' The prayers are about repentance. For personal sins. For sin in the church. For America’s sins. We focus on the vertical, that is, God. We don’t applaud for people. We only applaud for God…at the end. We don’t have speeches or sermons, except designated persons to call us to serious repentance. We don’t even introduce people. The spotlight is on God. People lead in prayer. To Him. For one minute. Sincere heartfelt prayer. Intense prayer. As if the nation depends on it. Because it does.”
- Dr. Jim Garlow, Well Versed,
Co-founder of the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance
“Our nation needs God. Now. Our Founding Fathers understood that our strength and unity were found in our commitment to Him and to His righteousness. We think America is strong, yet a long train of events reveals weakness on every front and historic level of division. We assume America will always be. It will not. 'Under God’ must become more than a part of our Pledge of Allegiance. 'In God we trust’ must be more than our national motto on our currency. America needs God. While some may refuse to accept that reality, we readily acknowledge that America truly does need God. It is for that reason that we come together at the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance to repent of sin. We invite you to join us on January 31 in the spirit of humility, brokenness, contriteness, and repentance.”
- Tony Perkins, Family Research Council,
Co-founder of the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance

WHY DO WE INVITE GOVERNMENT LEADERS TO PRAY PUBLICALLY?
The prayers of the leaders of a nation are very important to God, and they will have an impact on a nation:
CAUTION: THIS IS A SOLEMN ASSEMBLY
But when prayers of leaders attempt to manipulate God (like king Balak attempted to do through the pagan prophet Balaam), then God’s judgment is deserved (Numbers 22-24).
God will not be mocked (Galatians 6:6-7); trifling with Him will not end well.
All persons – elected and otherwise – are invited. However, to the best of our ability, the only elected officials who are allowed to lead in prayer, on a mic on the platform at the National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance during Part 1 (Prayers for Repentance), are those who have come to a point when they have fully yielded their lives to God, and – and this is vital – that they vote according to the Bible. A follower of Jesus cannot (at least long term) vote for dismembering babies in the womb and for so-called same sex “marriage.” Both are totally violations of God’s sacred Word.
We ask every person who will be on the platform to prepare themselves spiritually for being in the Presence of a Holy, Righteous and Just God.
The prayers of the leaders of a nation are very important to God, and they will have an impact on a nation:
- Hezekiah prayed for delivery from Assyria and it miraculously happened (2 Kings 19:19),
- Moses interceded when the Israelites sinned against God and deserved His wrath and the Lord was merciful (Exodus 32:11-14),
- David prayed for God’s blessing on Israel and his son Solomon and the Lord did so (1 Chronicles 29:10-22), and
- Solomon prayed for wisdom to govern a great nation so that it will continue to be blessed (1 Kings 3:3-14).
